Built in Virginia in 1943, The Intrepid was a US NAVY carrier ship during WWII, Cold War, and the Vietnam War. The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, is an American military and history museum with ships, planes, and hellicopters from WWII and the Cold War. It also contains a submarine and the Space Shuttle Enterprise It is located at Pier 86 at 46th Street in the Hell's Kitchen neighborhood on the West Side of Manhattan.
The Intrepid carrier also has a large collection of restored planes and helicopters that once supported the U.S ground forces in the vietnam and recovered astronauts in the 1960's. They take great pride in having one of the most varied aircraft collections in the nation. All five branches of the U.S. armed forces are represented, as well as several distinctive aircraft from around the world. they keep all planes on the top of the carriership in case if needed for use one day, the planes are still operational to this day. From the Avenger torpedo bomber, a stalwart from Intrepids World War II service, to the A-12 Lockheed A-12, the formidable spy plane from the Cold War, the collection reflects some of the greatest achievements in military aviation.There is even a space shuttle called "The Enterprise" that was the prototype NASA orbiter that paved the way for the space shuttle program. Seventeen dynamic exhibit zones feature original artifacts, photographs, audio, and films that immerse visitors in the science and history of Enterprise and the space shuttle era. Also located in the Pavilion is a space flown Soyuz TMA-6 space capsule, which invites comparison with Enterprise.
